Martin has been involved in the practice of information storage, structure, retrieval and use since entering the profession of information science in 1970. He was involved with the initial development of e-books and e-journals in the 1980s. In the 1990s he focused on intranets, especially with respect to content organisation and set up Intranet Focus Ltd in 1999 to offer consulting services on intranet and enterprise search implementation. He retired from this work in 2022 but remains a Visiting Professor in the Information School, University of Sheffield. He is the author of 12 books and is a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Chemistry and the British Computer Society. In 2023 he was awarded the Farradane and Strix Awards of UKeIG, the first recipient to be awarded both in the same year.
